Funeral services for Werner Dorneman, age 86, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2006, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank with the Reverend Janine Rew-Werling and the Reverend N. Craig Werling officiating. Werner died on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The organist will be Carol Ydstie. Family members are asked to meet in the church multi-purpose room by 10:00 a.m. Friday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. There will be a prayer service for family and friends in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening Visitation will continue at the church Friday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be his fourteen grandchildren: Suzanne Stluka; Michael Parker; Garrett Dorneman; Casey, Lindsey, and Kristopher Dorneman; Eric and Darren Medhaug; Jordan, Emily, and Cody Dorneman; and Stephanie, Megan, and Taryn Dorneman. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Werner was born on March 10, 1920, in rural Lac qui Parle County near Marietta, MN, the son of Henry and Lucy (Weckwerth) Dorneman. He attended school in Marietta through the eighth grade. Werner moved with his family to a farm near Nassau, MN, at an early age where he lived until 1943. In 1943 he moved to Vernon Township, Grant County, S.D. Werner started farming in 1950. He was united in marriage to Marian Loeschke on October 25, 1952, at her parent's farm home in Vernon Township. The couple lived in rural Alban Township from 1952-99. His wife Marian died on April 13, 1987. Werner moved to Milbank in 1999 and resided there until his death.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Werner was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank where he was a past member of the church council. He was a longtime, hard-working farmer and devoted family man. Even though he was retired and had moved into town, he enjoyed discussing farming with his sons and sons-in-law and keeping up on the new farm equipment and techniques. Werner enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends, dancing, and going to polka and old time fiddler festivals.
Survivors include his six children, Mary Jo Parker and husband Ray, Lake Andes, S.D.; Thomas Dorneman and wife Cheryl and Edmund Dorneman and wife, Pam, all of Watertown, S.D.; Jane Medhaug and husband Douglas, Veblen, S.D.; David Dorneman and wife Kristy, Milbank; and Robert Dorneman and wife Kim, Grand Forks, N.D.; fourteen grandchildren: Suzanne (Dan) Stluka, Danville, IL; Michael Parker, U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Jackson, S.C.; Garrett Dorneman, Watertown, S.D.; Casey (Laura) Dorneman, Huntsville, AL; Lindsey Dorneman, Washington, D.C.; Kristopher Dorneman and Eric Medhaug, Watertown, S.D.; Darren Medhaug, Brookings, S.D.; Jordan, Emily, and Cody Dorneman, Milbank, SD; and Stephanie, Megan, and Taryn Dorneman, Grand Forks, N.D.; one great grandchild; one sister Mary Lou Olson and husband Gene, Ortonville, MN; and special friend, Mary Whiting, Milbank.
Werner was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marian, and two brothers, Harold and Willis Dorneman.
