Funeral services for Wallace E. Johnson, age 92, of Strandburg, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2008, at the Elim Evangelical Covenant Church in Stockholm, SD. Pastor Mark Chapman will officiate. The pianist will be Verla Peterson. Mr. Johnson died on Thursday, November 6, 2008, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and in the church Monday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his friends. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons: Dustin Parmley, Matt Scott, Brian Dallman, and Daishon, Andre, Kody, and Dylan Johnson. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in rural Stockholm, SD, with graveside military rites presented by the Stockholm-Strandburg American Legion Post #171.
Wallace Edwin Johnson was born on November 29, 1915, to Gustaf Edwin Johnson and Anna Melinda Anderson, on a farm southwest of Strandburg. He later moved with his family into Strandburg. He was confirmed and baptized in 1930. Wallace attend Troy #2 country school southwest of Strandburg and graduated from Strandburg High School in 1934. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II in the South Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He married Barbara Lindberg on November 2, 1955. The couple lived in the Strandburg area. To this union four children were born.
Wallace worked various jobs: drilled wells with LuVerne Sundin, drove school bus for many years, farmed with his brother Robert, was a cemetery caretaker, and a self-employed handyman. He loved to ride his lawnmower, have his grandchildren around, to joke around with family and friends, and do crossword puzzles. He was a past member of the Stockholm-Strandburg American Legion #171.
Survivors include his two sons: Keith Johnson and wife Debbie, Sioux Falls, and Dale Johnson, Strandburg, SD; two daughters: Dawn Parmley and husband Darrell, Watertown, SD, and Dory Dallman and husband Gary, Revillo, SD; nine grandchildren: Stacy, Dustin, Nicole, Brian, Kristi, Dylan, Kody, Andre, and Daishon; six great grandchildren: Ryder, Mattison, Shelbi, Devin, Jordan, and Ashley; one brother, Lloyd Johnson, Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Delores Wondra, Bloomington, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Gladys, and five brothers, Glenn, Richard, Leonard, Raymond, and Robert Johnson.
