Virgil Raaf

Funeral Services for Virgil "Bud" Raaf will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 10:30 AM Trinity Lutheran Church Walter Township, rural Bellingham. Rev Thaine Kister will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Bellingham.

Virgil Robert Raaf was born on December 13, 1925 to parents Fred and Alma (Krogstad) Raaf at their home in Walter Township. Virgil was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church - Walter Township. He attended country school and then Bellingham High School graduating with the class of 1943.

On August 7, 1945, Virgil was united in marriage to Leone Lavonne Lau at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Nassau, MN. To this union, they were blessed with two children. They made their home in Walter Township. Virgil was a lifelong farmer. He raised Black Angus Cattle and farmed the land.

Leone passed away on April 12, 1994. Virgil continued to live on the family farm. On April 5, 1997, He was united in marriage to Verene D. Arneson at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Bellingham. Verene passed away on December 19, 2006.

Virgil loved the outdoors and enjoyed many things including: fishing, hunting, and playing golf. He also liked bowling, shooting pool, card games, shaking dice (especially horses), reading and singing bass. He was on the Bellingham Farmers Mutual Telephone Board for over twenty years and was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church - Walter Township. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially the rides in the country to see what the farmers were doing. He was a very happy man and greeted you often "how are you doing today?" and "I like you a lot."

In 2007, Virgil moved off of the farm that had been in his family for over one hundred years and into Fairway View in Ortonville. He lived there for three years until his move to Northridge Residence.

Virgil passed away on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Northridge Residence in Ortonville; he had lived to reach 85 years.

Virgil is survived by his children: Kevin (Dorothy) Raaf of Strandburg, SD and Ginger (Larry) Drobny of Nassau, MN; grandchildren: Mindy (Todd) Thielke of Clinton, MN, Stephanie Witmer of Aberdeen, SD and Julie Drobny of Nassau, MN; great-grandchildren: Shawna, Tyler, Korien, Jasmine, Kyle and Bruce; sister-in-law Lavina (Ralph) Loeschke of Milbank, SD; 2 nieces; 3 nephews; and many extended family and friends.

Virgil is preceded in death by his wives: Leone and Verene; parents Fred and Alma; and sister Evelyn (Walt) Zahnow.
