Funeral services for Vernon H. Thompson, age 81, of Wilmot, SD, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend N. Craig Werling will officiate. Vernon died on Saturday, May 6, 2006, at the Wilmot Care Center in Wilmot. The organist will be Carol Ydstie and the vocalists will be Deverne and Jan Rickard. Family members are asked to meet in the church multi-purpose room by 1:30 p.m. Thursday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Thursday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be his great grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery at South Shore, SD.
Vernon was born on May 4, 1925, in Stockholm Township, Grant County, SD, the son of Harry and Maude B. (Rickard) Thompson. He attended country school in Grant County, SD, through the eighth grade and attended ninth grade at South Shore High School.
He married Hazel Everson on June 24, 1946, in Watertown. Vernon farmed in the Stockholm-South Shore, SD, area, until retiring in 1978. He lived in Watertown, SD, from 1978-84. Vernon then moved to Milbank and resided at 807 S. 2. He lived at Rita's Elderly Home Care in Milbank for approximately three years until entering the Wilmot Care Center on Nov. 7, 2003.
Vernon was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. He was a past member of the Jeans and Janes Square Dancing Club in Watertown and danced with the Old Mill Twirlers in Milbank.
Survivors include one son Melvin Thompson and wife Ronda, rural South Shore, SD; four daughters, Dorothy Borns and husband Marlin, Grand Island, NE; Marilyn Borns and husband Dean, Watertown, SD; Sherry Stormo and husband Roger, Council Bluffs, IA; and Gwen Kranz, Minneapolis, MN; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; two sisters, Lavonne Schneck and husband Harlow, and Evelyn Hilbrands and husband Orville, all of Milbank, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Dale, and one sister Marjorie Thompson.
