Funeral services for Vernon (Dick) Heuer, age 79, of Milbank, and formerly of Revillo, SD, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 29, 2008, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend Jason Schulz will officiate. Dick died on Monday, February 25, 2008, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Gloria Hanson will be the organist. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. and in the church Friday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Jeff Heuer, Joe Heuer, Lyle Schultz, Wayne Heuer, Calvin Wojahn, and Scott Johnson. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Dick was born on September 1, 1928, in rural Summit, SD, the son of Emil and Elsie (Wellnitz) Heuer. He was baptized on October 14, 1928. He graduated from the Roberts County Veterinary School on April 14, 1950. Dick spent all of his working life in the veterinary field, until ill health forced him to retire in 1995. He was also an inventor and held several patents. He enjoyed observing the marvels of nature and was always willing to give a helping hand to others.
He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his brother Dale Heuer and wife Sherrie, Osakis, MN; three sisters-in-law, Betty Heuer, Milbank; Rose Heuer, Stockholm, SD; and Bonnie Heuer, Bandera, Texas; several cousins, nieces and nephews; his special little girl, Melissa Justison and her mother Teresa Justison, both of Nashwauk, MN.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Vera Schultz, and five brothers, Gerald, Ervin, Leslie, Arlen, and Harvey Heuer.
