Vernice was born July 11, 1931, in Brookings, SD, the daughter of Lillian (Dybdahl) and William Egeberg. She was united in marriage with Marcel Dohrer on November 23, 1947, at American Lutheran Church in Milbank with Pastor Otterstad officiating. Vernice was very proud to be a charter member of American Lutheran Church.
Vernice moved to Grant County at the age of five and attended school in rural Twin Brooks and Milbank High School. She helped farm with her husband, Marcel, for many years before beginning her professional career at Milbank Mutual Insurance Company (Royal Ins.) in May, 1971. She retired from Milbank Insurance in August of 1993 after 22 years of dedicated service. After Vernice's retirement she was finally able to enjoy her time through her volunteer work with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary (lifetime member Post #3486), the Thrift Store, delivering Meals on Wheels and taking the nourishment cart around at the hospital and St. William's Care Center as a member of the Milbank Area Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Milbank Insurance Retirees and enjoyed those events as well. Vernice's hobbies included crocheting, working crossword puzzles, fishing, and playing cards.
Vernice was a loving mother and took great pride in her family and loved spending time with them as much as possible. At all of the family gatherings for holidays, she was most famous for her banana cream pies!
Those grateful for having shared her life are her three sons: Doug and wife Peg, Milbank; Rick and wife Barb, Watertown, SD; and Bob and wife Linda, Eden Prairie, MN; her daughter Jolene of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorrie Krumm and her husband Dutch, Volga, SD, and Carol Dorman and husband Dale, Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter Jean, an infant son, William, at birth, two brothers and two sisters.
