Vera Jean (Callanan) Hyatt was born on February 15, 1932, to Edward and Mae (Amsden) Callanan on the family farmstead near Beardsley in Big Stone County, MN. She attended country school until eighth grade. She married Gene J. Hyatt on May 13, 1949, at the Trinity Lutheran Church Parsonage in Ortonville. Vera was a long-time Ortonville resident who moved to Aberdeen in 2015 to be closer to her family.
Vera worked at the Ortonville JC Penney for 23 years in addition to being a distributor for the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member for as long as she lived in Ortonville.
Vera was a voracious reader, and talented at crochet and several types of needlework. She shared her love for being on the water with her grandchildren, teaching many of them to water ski; she also attended many of their sports and school activities. Her family will miss her never-duplicated chocolate chip cookies. Among her many talents was her skill at yodeling, having appeared on stage in South Dakota and at Beer Halls in Germany.
Vera will be remembered as an avid traveler: she always had her bags packed, was ready to go at a moment’s notice, and she did so many times. She visited 11 countries and 47 states. She and Gene loved to tour in their motor home, boating, and fishing. She loved to share a game of Bridge or Cribbage with her family and friends.
Vera is survived by her children: Carol Hyatt of Aberdeen, SD; Gary (Eileen) Hyatt of Winter Haven, FL; Greg (Kathy) Hyatt of Pierz, MN; and Glen (Marcia) Hyatt of Broomfield, CO; grandchildren: Chad (Brenda) Randleman, Carla (Steve) Haug, Sean (Denise) Hyatt, Tyler (Bailey) Hyatt, Gene Hyatt, Joe (Amanda) Hyatt, Adam (Shelby) Hyatt, Alexis Hyatt, Callan Hyatt, Aaron (Stacey) Manthey; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.
