Funeral services for Mrs. Vera Boe, age 90, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2006, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverend Craig Werling will officiate. Vera died on Thursday, September 28, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare in Milbank. Family members are asked to meet in the church multi-purpose room by 10:00 a.m. Monday to attend services. The organist will be Kristy Tostenson and the soloist will be . Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Monday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Thomas Nearman, Aaron Boe, Matthew Anderson, Ryan Boe, Jeffrey Herbert, and Mark Tschider. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Vera Lois Boe was born in Turner County, Davis, South Dakota, on January 23, 1916, to Emery and Nettie (Timmerman) Jibben. She moved with her family to the Revillo, SD area as a very young child. She attended school in rural Deuel County and in Revillo, graduating from Revillo High School in 1933. After graduation, she did housework and child-care for a short time. She then was employed at the Revillo bank.
She was united in marriage with Hans M. Boe on November 7, 1936, in Milbank. They farmed near Milbank and Stockholm and then purchased a farm west of Twin Brooks in 1942. Hans died in 1962. Vera moved to Milbank in 1965 where she resided until 2001 when she moved to Park Place. She became a resident of Beverly Healthcare in 2003.
Vera began working as the parish secretary at American Lutheran Church in Milbank in 1959. She served in this capacity for over thirty years retiring in 1989. In 1978 the American Lutheran Church commissioned her as a certified lay worker. She was always proud of the fact that her family was a charter member of the American Lutheran Church that was founded in 1947. Both Hans and Vera were very instrumental in the planning and building of the new American Lutheran Church in Milbank that was completed in 1956.
She also held many volunteer positions in her church including: Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, Luther League advisor, chairman of the Altar Guild, Bethel Bible Study Class instructor, confirmation instructor, member of the church choir and the church quilters. Vera organized the Thursday morning prayer group. She was very active in the WMF and ALCW women's groups of her church, having held offices at the local, district, and state levels. Vera also served as a delegate to a number of national conventions.
Vera was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family and farm life. She had a quick sense of humor which her many friends enjoyed. She had a strong faith which she relied on for her strength and used it to touch many people over the years. Her passion in life was reading and she enjoyed traveling. One of her fondest memories was touring Germany with her daughter Lois and her son Richard who served as their official tour guide. In later years she especially found joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Lois Nearman and husband Duane and Richard Boe and wife Janice, of Sioux Falls, SD; Ronald Boe and wife Sandra, Milbank; and Sandra Anderson and husband Roland, Grand Ledge, Michigan; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hans, her parents, two brothers, and one sister.
