Velinda Zemple

October 13, 1920 — November 27, 2009

Velinda Zemple, age 89, was welcomed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on November 27th at the Northridge Residence surrounded by family and friends.

Velinda Christina Petra Stevens was born on October 13, 1920, to Andrew and Sena (Freeman) Stevens in Hegbert Township, Swift County, MN. She was baptized in the Christian faith at the Hegbert Lutheran Church and confirmed at Eidskog Lutheran Church. Her elementary education was at the Correll Elementary School and she graduated with the Class of 1940 from Ortonville Public School.

Velinda was united in marriage to Richard Zemple and to this union two daughters were born. Velinda was a devoted wife and gracious homemaker. The coffee pot was always on and homemade goodies were always ready to enjoy. They farmed together and shared chores duties, which she enjoyed thoroughly. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed exhibiting at the Big Stone County Fair. She was a 4-H assistant leader and a member of the Almond Homemakers. After Richard’s untimely death in November 1960, Velinda and Sharon moved to Ortonville. Velinda began waitressing at the Stenson’s Mobil Cafe, later to the Corner Cafe and then to Cashtown Cafe working there for twenty-three years until retiring. As a faithful OHS Sports Booster Supporter she knitted orange/black caps and mittens as the various teams went to Regional-State Tournaments. She enjoyed knitting baby caps, blankets and afghans, Christmas boots, scarves, and dishcloths. Many of her family and friends were recipients of these gifts. Following retirement she became a volunteer for Ortonville Senior Center, RSVP and at Northridge Residence.

Velinda was very proud of her family and always had a big smile when the grandchildren and great grandchildren came to visit. She faithfully followed the sporting events which they participated in, be it on radio or reading about the events in the local newspaper. (attested by the clippings in her scrapbooks).

Zion Lutheran was Velinda’s “church home” since 1941, where she enjoyed being a member of the Ladies Aid/Lutheran Church Women, serving as Kitchen Custodian and a member of the Altar Guild.

Velinda is survived by her daughters, Betty (Richard “Dick”) Casper, and Sharon (Raul “Louie”) Martinez, granddaughter, Carla Dobbs, great grandson, Devan Dobbs, great granddaughter, Jaycie Gunderson, and niece Jillene (Walter “Bud”) Strasser. She was blessed with a wonderful extended family throughout the years.

Velinda was preceded in death by husband, Richard, granddaughter, Elisa, an infant sister, her parents, brother and sister-in-law and many other treasured loved ones.

Blessed be the memory of Velinda Zemple.
