Russell Osborne

Memorial services for Russell R. Osborne, age 45, of Milbank, and formerly of Ouray, CO, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. Reverend DeVern Schwenn will officiate. Russ died on Friday, December 8, 2006, at St. William's Care Center in Milbank. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to attend services. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 5-8 p.m. The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank is in charge of the arrangements.
Russell Robert Osborne was born on February 25, 1961, at Sioux Falls, SD, the son of Robert D. and Shirley J. (Lunstra) Osborne. He started in rural school near Elk Point, SD, moved with his family to Milbank, where he attended grades two through ten. In 1979, he graduated from Deubrook High School at White, SD. While in school Russ participated in forensics and sports, excelling in track and cross-country.
Russ was active in 4-H and FFA, winning many purple ribbons and trophies for his beef, horticulture, and food exhibits, as well as demonstrations, public speaking, and judging team activities. In 1980 he was elected president of the SD 4-H Council, and served as a delegate to the National 4-H conference in Toronto, Canada.
Russell attended South Dakota State University, worked for a time at Morrells and Tiger Manufacturing in Sioux Falls, and later studied at Colorado State University, where he received his B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1986.
He lived in Denver, CO, and worked in real estate title research. Then he moved to Ouray, CO, where he worked for Lawyer's Title Company.
Following that, Russ worked in Nevada for several years as a geologist and mining technician in a mining venture. There he developed procedures to extract minerals and precious metals from dry lakebed sediment in the desert. In 2002 he moved to Arlington, VA, and lived for a short time with his sister Susan and family. In 2003 he returned to Ouray where he was self-employed, specializing in electronic installations. Russ returned to South Dakota in June of this year.
Throughout his life Russ cared deeply for animals, nature, and the environment. He loved the outdoors in all seasons, especially the Colorado Rocky Mountains where he enjoyed hiking, camping, horseback riding, skiing, and exploring. He especially enjoyed his nieces Katie and Faith whom he loved to teach about nature, astronomy, and geology.
Survivors include his father, Robert D. Osborne and his wife Mary Ann, of rural Wilmot, SD; his sister, Susan Cunningham, her husband Bryan, and nieces Katie and Faith, Englewood, CO; his stepbrothers, Bret Healy, wife Stephanie, and step-niece, Peyton Healy, Pukwana, SD; Barry Healy, wife Brandi, and two step-nephews, Devon and Jamison, Pierre, SD; and Bryce Healy, wife Mary, and step-nieces, Hannah and Kennedy, Pierre, SD; and his paternal grandparents, Duane and Alma Osborne, Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Russell was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley, his brother, Steve Osborne, and his maternal grandparents.
