Roy “Sammy” Haugen, age 71, of Ortonville, MN, died on March 13, 2018. Services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church. Rev. David Tonn will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Roy “Sammy” La Verne Haugen was born on November 19, 1946, In Ortonville, MN. He was the son of Simon O. and Florence (Bohnsack) Haugen. Roy grew up in Ortonville, and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1964. He then enlisted with the U.S. Navy, and served from December 1965 to October 1967.
Shortly after he was released to inactive duty, he worked at both Culligan and Gambles in Minneapolis, MN. A year later, he returned to his hometown, Ortonville. Roy worked at Hoxtell’s and was a school bus driver. He continued to drive the school bus for over 30 years.
Roy was a member of First English Lutheran Church, The Moose Lodge, VFW Big Stone lake Post #3964 and the Big Stone American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. Roy was a man of very few words. He was easygoing and slow to anger. He was always willing to help a friend or neighbor. His family will remember his smile, laugh, and his funny sense of humor.
Roy is survived by his sister, Sharon; nieces: Kellie Thielke; Lori (Bruce) Thielke-Whitmore; Brenda (John) Hamm-Ferm; and Lisa (Robby) Hamm-Sharp; great-nieces and great-nephews: Haley, Madelyn, Hannah, Zachary, Joshua, Cassidy, Madison, Rachel, and Lindsey; great-great-grandnephew, Odin; and cousins: Delores, Bruce, Pat, Dennis, Judy, Marva Lynn, and Lyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Florence and Simon; sister, Beverly; and brothers-in-law: Richard and Roger.
