Robert Watkins

Funeral services for Robert Loren Watkins will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley, MN. Father David Breu will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will be at the Clinton City Cemetery.

Robert Loren Watkins was born in Marietta, MN on January 27, 1928 to Harold and Alice (Mortenson) Watkins. The Watkins family moved to Clinton when Robert was very young. He attended school in Clinton, joined the Navy when he was 17, and three years later was honorably discharged.

On August 7, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mildred Schwagel in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Beardsley, MN. To this union, they were blessed with six children – Ann, Lynn, Kathy, Alan, Sheri, and Melanie.

After marriage, they made their home in Minneapolis and then returned to the Big Stone Lake area. They also resided in Fridley for a short time. Robert worked a variety of jobs, most involving electronic sales and repair. He and Mildred also owned and operated the Shady Dell Resort on Lake Traverse for 10 years. He retired in 2004.

Robert enjoyed ham radios, and he formed friendships all around the world. He also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles. He was a member of the VFW in Sisseton and the American Legion in Browns Valley.

Robert passed away on August 13, 2011. He lived to reach the age of 83 years.

Robert is survived by his children Ann Helmeke of Rock Hill, SC; Lynn (Paula) of Browns Valley, MN; Kathy Dusing of Hankinson, ND; Alan (Terri Luchner) of Spirit Lake, IA; Sheri (Terille) Stavick of Bremerton, WA; and Melanie (Gary) Markfort of Rock Hill, SC; 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Hubner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Alice; his wife, Mildred; his brother, Harold, Jr.; his granddaughter, Christine Stavick; and his great grandson, Daniel Stavick.
