Robert Waddell

Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Waddell, age 94, of rural Marvin, SD, will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2006, in the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. The Reverend DeVern Schwenn will officiate. Bob died on Thursday, March 9, 2006, in the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 12:30 p.m. Monday to attend services. The organist will be Neoma Ballhagen and the soloist will be his granddaughter Liz (Waddell) Brooks. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 5-7 p.m., followed by a prayer service. Visitation will continue in the church on Monday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Isaiah, Luke, and Levi Waddell, B.J. Howell, Tim Brooks, Clint Carlson, Alex, Josh, and Matthew Griess, Theodore Mozzo, Scott Durick, and Roger Peacock. Burial will be in the Osceola No. 1 Cemetery, at Marvin, SD.
Bob was born on December 22, 1911, on the family farm near Henry, SD, the son of William and Verna (Kitterman) Waddell. He lived with his family at Garden City, SD, from 1911-39. Bob attended Elrod Township Country School through the eighth grade. He lived at Trail City, SD, from 1939-47. Bob was a WW II veteran having served his country in the United States Army from April 14, 1942, until his honorable discharge on August 14, 1945. He served in the following battles and campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Service Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Trail City. Bob was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Shape on February 17, 1947, at Webster, SD. They moved to Marvin in 1960. He was a rancher and tree seed picker. Following Dorothy's death on January 23, 1980, Bob continued to live in rural Marvin.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Bob was a member of and treasurer of the Osceola Township Board until retiring in 2005. He was easy-going man with a good sense of humor. Bob enjoyed visiting with people of all ages.
Survivors include one son Tellus Waddell and wife Lori, Marvin, SD; three daughters, Rose Carlson and husband Rodger, Summit, SD; Verna Mozzo and husband Bill, Enterprise, AL; and Kathy Griess and husband Randy, Grand Island, NE; thirteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Ray Shape and wife Mary Jane, Rapid City, SD; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son Troy, six brothers, and three sisters.
