Robert Schreiner

Robert Dale Schreiner was born on September 22, 1922, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, to Frank and Ann Schreiner. He was confirmed at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors in 1936. He attended school in Two Harbors and graduated from high school in 1940. He married Helen Pauline Sellie on November 14, 1942, in Duluth, Minnesota; and to that marriage three children were born, Roberta, Barbara, and Douglas.
Robert enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942, served with distinction in the South Pacific Theater of Operations and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Air Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations Medal with four campaign stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, Victory Medal, and the Presidential Citation. Robert was honorably discharged in 1946.
Robert then attended the University of Minnesota under the GI Bill of Rights. While at the University, Robert and his wife, Helen, and two daughters lived at the University Village, a housing development solely for World War II veterans and their families. The population of the Village was approximately 4,000, and it had its own council, aldermen, and mayor. Robert served as mayor of the University Village, and for his service to the village, the university awarded him the Order of the SKI-U-MAH.
Following graduation, Robert practiced law in the Twin Cities for a short while, then came to Ortonville in 1952 and practiced law with the late Clifford J. Benson. In 1954, he was elected as Big Stone County Attorney, and he served as such for 38 years, retiring from that office in 1986. He continued to practice law until his death.
Robert was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church of Ortonville, serving as president, church council member, and also on a number of committees in the church. He was an active member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the National District Attorneys Association, and past president of the Fourteenth Judicial District Bar Association. He was also an active member of many of Ortonville's civic associations, having served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, charter president of the Ortonville-Clinton Toastmasters Club, charter vice-president of the Big Stone Sons of Norway Lodge, member of the Board of Directors of Ortonville's CenBank, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a 59-year member of the American Legion.
Death came to Robert on September 23, 2005, in Ortonville, Minnesota. He is survived by his daughters, Roberta (Thomas) Prochaska of Houston, Texas; and Barbara (Harold) Ewing of Hopkins, South Carolina; grandson, Brad (Poe) Prochaska; granddaughters, Shannon (Barry) Everett, Ashley Ewing, and Jessica Schreiner; great-grandchildren, Trinity Everett, Ruby Everett, Irisch Prochaska, and Ilah Prochaska; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Narveson; a brother-in-law, Arnold Sellie; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son, Douglas; mother, Ann; father, Frank; sister, Marguerite; and brother, Frank Jr.
"Do not consider my leaving a time of sorrow and mourning. I know the Lord has blessed me in many ways. I was blessed with a wonderful wife and family, a caring and compassionate church, and a host of wonderful friends and clients. I have loved and enjoyed life to the fullest. I loved athletics and all sports; and as I continually advised those of you who I have golfed and bowled with, I will quit a "natural athlete." I was blessed with the opportunity to serve my county in WWII. I loved the practice of law and was proud of my profession. I am proudest of all that you, the voters of Big Stone County, chose to re-elect me for nine consecutive terms as you County Attorney and I thank you deeply. So I say farewell and until we meet again, God bless you!"
