Robert Pickthorn

Robert Raymond Pickthorn was born on September 10, 1920, in Browns Valley, MN, to parents, Frank and Myrtle (Shandorf) Pickthorn. As a young boy, he attended school in Browns Valley, and graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1937. Following graduation, Robert married Evelyn McCleerey on November 14, 1941, in Chicago, IL. To this union two children were born, Ron and Dianna.
On August 31, 1945, Robert was drafted into the United States Army. He was Honorably Discharged on February 4, 1946, with the rank of Private. Upon his return home from the service, Robert moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he drove street car for a number of years. Robert then moved to California where he drove truck, delivering and selling bread for the Metz Bread Company. While in California, Robert married his wife Beverly in 1948. Together the couple lived in California until Beverly passed away in 1983. Following her death, Robert returned to Browns Valley, where he cared for his sister, Helen. During this time, he met his special friend Evelyn Stoffel.
In his spare time, Robert enjoyed to travel especially to Las Vegas, NV, and Crystal Cathedral, CA. He treasured memories made visiting with family and friends and also cherished time spent with Evelyn attending dances at the VFW in Sisseton, SD, on Saturday nights. Robert also enjoyed volunteering his time and spent 15 years as a volunteer driver for area residents who needed to go to a medical facility and couldn't drive themselves.
Robert passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley, MN, reaching the age of 85 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Myrtle; wife Beverly; brother, Leonard, and sister, Helen Siler.
Robert is survived by a son, Ron (Barbara) Dody; daughter, Dianna (Roy) Filkins; two grandchildren, Jeff and Steve Dody; and one great grandchild, Cierra Rose Dody; nieces and nephews, Sherman (Thelma) Pickthorn of Watertown, SD; Colleen (Bill) Hedges of Brandon, SD; Janice Segner of Plymouth, MN; and James (Joyce) Pickthorn, of Sisseton, SD, and a very special friend of sixteen years, Evelyn Stoffel.
