Funeral services for Reverend Kenneth J. Hodum, age 91, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend Craig Werling and Reverend Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. Pastor Hodum died on Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Golden Living Center in Milbank. The organist will be Carol Ydstie. The American Lutheran Church Chancel Choir and The Milltones will provide special music. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Monday from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Tuesday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Prairie-Coteau Conference Pastors and members of the Milbank Area Ministerial Association. Active pallbearers will be Marty Buttke, Ron Anderson, David Bergan, Charles Myklegard, Clayton Olson, and Harold Stubbe. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Kenneth John Hodum was born on March 4, 1916, in St. Paul, MN, the son of John and Alvina (Pogalz) Hodum. He was baptized in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN, on April 30, 1916. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on May 19, 1929, in Hope Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN.
He was united in marriage to Gertrude Brandt Ebsen on July 5, 1955, at Hope Lutheran Church in St. Paul.
Pastor Ken graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, in 1938 with the Degree of Bachelor of Arts, and from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, in 1941, with the Degree of Bachelor of Divinity.
He was ordained into the Lutheran Ministry on June 1, 1941. In June of that year he was installed as pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church at Alta Vista, Iowa. In February of 1944 he accepted the call to become pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenwood City, WI, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest, WI. In July of 1953 he moved to Marietta, MN, where he became pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Nassau and Grace Lutheran Church in Albee, SD. In January of 1959 he became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa. April of 1964 found him moving to Welcome, MN, where he became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. His final call was in November 1975 to become pastor of West Moe and East Moe Lutheran Churches in rural Brandon, MN.
In June 1983 he moved to Milbank, SD. Since that time he had served as interim pastor at a number of congregations in MN and SD, and also filled in on many occasions where pastoral services were needed. In June of 1991 he observed his 50th Year of Ordination at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, at the Synod Assembly of the South Dakota Synod of the ELCA, and at American Lutheran Church in Milbank.
Survivors include two nephews, one niece, his good friend Reverend David Gran and wife Anne, of Alexandria, MN, and a host of other friends.
His wife Gertrude died on February 23, 1993. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Leona Hodum and Ruth Zaugg and husband Harold.
