Graveside services for the cremated remains of Mrs. Phyllis W. Petersen, age 89, of Greeley, CO, and formerly of Milbank, SD, will be held in the Milbank City Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008. The Reverend Dr. DeVern Schwenn will officiate. Phyllis died on Saturday, June 14, 2008, in hospice care at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. She was cremated. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado in care of Adamson Chapels, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, CO 80634. The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank is in charge of the arrangements.
Phyllis was born on April 26, 1919, in Grant Center Township, SD, to Irvin and Elsie (Bohn) Trapp. She walked to school each day with her siblings and completed the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to William Lars Petersen in Ortonville, MN, on November 28, 1939. To their union four children were born: Carol Jean, Roger William, Larry Charles, and Marsha Ann. After raising her children, Phyllis worked as a school cook in Milbank for twenty-two years. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Milbank and took her children to church every Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Petersen were married for fifty-three years. On their 50th wedding anniversary the governor of SD gave an executive proclamation that November 28th would be "William and Phyllis Petersen Day".
Survivors include her daughters, Carol Carlson and husband Lloyd, and Marsha Ebsen and husband Loren, all of Greeley, CO; her son Roger Petersen and wife Christine, Hot Springs, SD; her daughter-in-law, Lynda Petersen, Estes Park, CO; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Iwerks, Greeley, CO, and Geraldine Chaloupka, Twin Brooks, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband Bill; son Larry Charles Petersen; and a brother, Dale Trapp, preceded her in death.
