Funeral services for Phyllis I. Johnsen, age 91, of rural Corona, SD, and formerly of Geneseo Township, Roberts County, SD, and Wilmot, SD will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8th, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot, SD. The Reverend Dr. DeVern Schwenn will officiate. The organist will be Sharon Ammann; the pianist will be Neoma Ballhagen; and the soloist will be Pam Wolfe. Phyllis died on Thursday, February 4th, at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD. The family prefers that memorials be directed to the Children's Inn, 409 N. Western Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104; or to the Black Hills Children's Home, 24100 S. Rockerville Rd., Rapid City, SD 57702; or to the Wilmot Cemetery Association.
Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:30 a.m. Monday to attend services. Visitation will be at the church Monday one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be Todd Frerichs, Mike Frerichs, Jason Ramstad, Van Johnsen, Ben Johnson, and T.J. Johnson. Burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery Association.
Phyllis was born on May 12, 1918, in Lee Township, Roberts County, SD, to Samuel and Anna (Behrens) Howell. She moved with her family to Wilmot in September 1918. She graduated from Wilmot High School in 1936. Phyllis worked at the telephone office in Wilmot before marriage.
She married Lauritz Johnsen on June 10, 1938, in Sisseton, SD.
Following marriage, the couple resided on their farm in Geneseo Township, Roberts County, SD. After her children were raised, Phyllis became the Activity Director at the Whetstone Valley Nursing Home (now the Golden Living Center) in Milbank until she retired. Lauritz died on July 28, 1987. Phyllis continued to live on the farm until 1989 when she moved to Wilmot. She had lived with her daughter Judy and son-in-law Gene in rural Corona since September 2007.
Phyllis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot where she was a past Sunday school teacher, choir member, member of the Adult Bible School class and the morning church circle. She was also a past member of the Stonecroft Bible Study, the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary in Milbank, and the Wilmot Care Center Auxiliary.
Mrs. Johnsen is survived by one daughter, Judy Frerichs and husband Gene, rural Corona, SD; three sons: Gene Johnsen and wife Karen, Milbank; Duane Johnsen and wife Sherry, Vancouver, WA; and Jerry Johnsen and wife Wanda, Reno, Nevada; ten grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and four great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Sandvig, Tucson, AZ, and Detroit, MI, and Betty Hobbs, Osceola, WI; three brothers, Elton Howell and wife Alice, Tucson, AZ; Clayton Howell and wife Jenny, Millington, MI; and Herschuel Howell, Annandale, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her parents, husband Lauritz, son Dale, granddaughter Dawn Johnsen, two sisters, Alice Eastman and Mildred Howell, and one brother, Milton Howell, preceded Phyllis in death.
