Phyllis Haanen

Funeral services for Phyllis Haanen will be held on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the United Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley, MN. Visitation will be held at the church Thursday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, with a 6:30 PM prayer service, and also one hour prior to the service. Rev. Dwight Fearing will be officiating. Casketbearers will be Greg Haanen, Jeff Haanen, Joe Hedrick, Bob Hedrick, Charles Wyman, and Shawn Dusing. Honorary Casketbearers are Phyllis' Grandchildren and Greatgrandchildren. Music will be provided by Ginny Westbrock, Sue Sykora, and Stacy Borgheiinck. Burial will be in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Browns Valley.

Phyllis Mary Haanen was born on a farmstead in Foster Township, outside of Browns Valley, to George and Marguerite (Perron) McLane on July 11, 1921. Phyllis grew up on the farm and attended school in Browns Valley, graduating in 1938. .

After graduation, Phyllis worked in a local store until she married James Haanen on December 5, 1938. To this union one son was born.

Phyllis held a variety of jobs in Browns Valley – at the bakery, library, drug store, and U.S. Bank. However, her pleasure in life was to nurture her family and the hired men on the farm – she spent many hours cooking and serving wonderful meals during the long work days! Phyllis enjoyed knitting and crocheting, gifting her family and friends with her handiwork. She brought joy to herself and others when she played the piano.

Phyllis passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 in Fargo, ND. She had lived to reach the age of 90 years.

Phyllis will always be remembered for the deep love and care she bestowed upon her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, of whom she was very proud.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, James, of Browns Valley; son, Roger (Janet) Haanen, of Browns Valley; three grandchildren: Greg (Cari) Haanen of Browns Valley; Tamara Peterson (Jim Hoffer) of Spicer, MN; and Jeff Haanen of Browns Valley; eight great grandchildren: Erin, Whitney, and Savanna Haanen of Browns Valley; Kira and Tory Peterson of Spicer, MN; and Dylan, Morgan, and Isaac Haanen of Browns Valley; sisters: Kathryn Wyman and Betty Hedrick, of St. Paul, MN; Shirley (Lloyd) Smith of Milbank, SD; Patricia (Larry) Dusing of North Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents; sister Georgia Zietlow; and brothers: Robert McLane and George (Buzz) Jr. McLane.
