Phillip Peterson

Funeral services for Phillip O. Peterson, age 77, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the American Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverends Craig Werling and Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. Phil died on Saturday, April 4th, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Family members are asked to meet in the church multi-purpose room by 10:00 a.m. Thursday to attend services. The organist will be Carol Ydstie and the soloist will be Tara Fletcher. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Thursday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Jim Behrens, Tom Kasuske, Keith Pauli, Virgil Kaufman, Jerry Stengel, and Gerry Poppen. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery with graveside military rites presented by the Grant County VFW Post #3486 and the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9, of Milbank.

Phillip O. Peterson was born on November 19, 1931, in Sisseton, SD, to Joseph B. and Anna (Dahl) Peterson. He attended a country school near Sisseton. Phil served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. He lived in Sisseton from birth until marriage. Prior to marriage, Phillip was employed with the Fleet Wholesale Store in Sisseton from 1959-64.
He was united in marriage to Ardes Dalberg on November 25, 1964, in Webster, SD. Following marriage the couple resided in Milbank where he worked for the Fleet Wholesale and the Country General Store until his retirement in 1997. He was employed part-time at United Hardware for six years and worked the past two years at the Pine Hills Golf Course.

Phillip was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank where he and his wife Ardes regularly attended church and where he often helped with ushering. He was also a member of the Grant County VFW Post #3486 and the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9.

Phillip was a very well-known person with a very generous heart. He was always easy to talk to and get acquainted with. Phil was a very loyal and hard worker all of his life. He enjoyed being around people and looked forward to meeting his buddies for coffee. Family meant a lot to Phillip. He valued his time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He especially treasured the moments in the past month with his new great granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife Ardes, Milbank; two sons, Michael, Aurora, CO, and Matthew, of Milbank; two daughters, Lori Buescher and husband Bruce, Twin Brooks, SD, and Amy Stone and husband Bob, Milbank; six grandchildren: Miranda Stengel, Brandi Buescher, and Amanda, Olivia, Christine, and Ashley Stone; two great granddaughters: Macyn Stengel and Aaliyah Stone; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two baby sisters, his parents, and sister Mirvis.
