Funeral services for retired rural Milbank farmer, Phillip H. Mueller, age 82, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2007, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverend James L. Wiese will officiate. Phil died on Thursday, July 26, 2007, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The organist will be and the Faith Choir will present special music. Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 10:00 a.m. Monday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and in the church Monday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters and his friends in Melrose Township. Active pallbearers will be grandsons: Jeff Mueller, Gregg Mueller, Scott Mueller, Aaron Clapp, Jacob Mueller, and Kevin Schwartz. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Phillip Herbert Paul Mueller was born December 16, 1924, in rural Grant County, SD, the son of Gottlieb and Ella (Kamin) Mueller. He moved with his parents to Roberts County, SD. He attended grade school in Lockwood and Geneseo Townships. Phil graduated from Big Stone City High School in Big Stone City, SD, in 1943. Following high school, he helped many farming neighbors. Phil served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II from May 3, 1946, until his honorable discharge on November 1, 1947. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
Phil was united in marriage to Lois E. Rubbert on Sept. 1, 1948, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Following marriage, the couple purchased a farm from John Johnson five and one-quarter miles north of Milbank. Phil retired from farming in 1996. They continued to reside on the farm until 2000 when they moved to their present apartment in Milbank.
He was a longtime member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church. Over the years Phil willingly served his church as a Sunday school teacher, high school Bible study teacher (which he initiated), and as a church board member. He served many years as the church financial secretary. Phil sang in the Emanuel Men's Choir and the Mixed Choir. He was also a past member of the Melrose #1 School Board, the Melrose Township Weed Board, the Grant County Weed Board, and the State Weed Board.
Phil loved his farm. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, reading, and softball.
Survivors include his wife Lois, Milbank; six children:
Howard (Karin) Mueller, Milbank; Joyce (Dave) Schwartz, Parkers Prairie, MN; Lorraine "Lori" Mueller, New Brighton, MN; Thomas (Roberta) Mueller, Milbank; and Barbara (James) Walker and Rebecca (Brent) Zell, Sioux Falls; sixteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three brothers: Carl (Harriet) Mueller, Bella Vista, AR; Ray (Ellen) Mueller and Melvin (Camillus) Mueller, Milbank; two sisters: Shirley (Frank) Fabozzi, Denver, CO, and Eloise (Bert) Van Engen, Chase City, VA; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Mueller, rural Corona, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His parents, his son Gordon in infancy, his son Glenn, his half-brother, Rueben Mueller and his brother Eldor Mueller preceded him in death.
