Peter Kostiuk

Peter Kostiuk, age 89, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Ortonville Area Health Services Hospital.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ortonville, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Fr. Brian Oestreich will officiate the service and inurnment will be at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville at later date.

Peter Kostiuk was born on May 10, 1933, in Drayton, ND, to Mathew and Mena (Syvock) Kostiuk. He was baptized at the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Pembina, ND. Peter attended school in Pembina and graduated from Pembina High School. He later attended trade school in Wahpeton, ND, for auto body repair.

Peter enlisted in the United States Navy on March 10, 1954, and served his country earning a National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 18,1957, and returned home.

Working at many auto body shops in the Midwest, Peter held jobs in Cavalier, ND, Fertile, MN, and Herried, SD. In 1965, he moved to Minneapolis and worked at various auto body shops in that area. Peter was self-employed as an auto body repair man in Pembina, ND.

On April 16, 1966, Peter was united in marriage with Maureen Karels in Madison, MN. The two lived in many places where Peter’s work took them, finally retiring and making their home in Ortonville, MN.

Peter was a member of the American Legion in Pembina and was active with the Fort Pembina Historical Society. He enjoyed antique cars, wood carving, and leather tooling. Peter had a vast collection of padlocks and keys. He was an avid reader of history and historical books. Peter never turned down a good game of pool or cards.

Surviving Peter are his wife of 56 years, Maureen Kostiuk of Ortonville, MN; brother, Nick Kostiuk of San Diego, CA; sisters: Rose (Tom) Nowak of Petaluma, CA; and Helen Anne (Ernie) Novak of Grafton, ND; along with many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; baby boy, Frederick Roman Kostiuk; sister, Olga Hanson; brother, Michael Kostiuk; brother-in-law, Gene Hanson; and sister-in-law, Sharon Kostiuk.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church meat distribution or a charity of personal choice.
