Oliver “Ole” Mohnsen Obituary
Oliver “Ole” Mohnssen, age 85, of Big Stone City, S.D, formerly of Clear Lake, S.D. and Milbank, S.D. died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Northridge Nursing Home in Ortonville.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ortonville, Minnesota with Rev. John Ragan officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Oliver Mohnsen, the son of John and Frieda (Hull) Mohnsen, was born April 4, 1923 at Leigh, Nebraska. He entered the US Navy, from 1945 to 1946 and served in the Pacific area. Ole was united in marriage to Darlene Ellis on June 14, 1946 at Leigh, Nebraska. After his discharge from the service he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska where he received his bachelor degree in agriculture.
In 1950, he taught World War II veterans agriculture at the University of Nebraska for a few years. He then worked with the State Extension Services.
In 1955, Ole began with the US Department of Agriculture as farm management supervisor for Farm and Home Administration (FMHA) in Milbank, S.D. He worked for the same agency in Clear Lake from 1956 to 1962, in Milbank again from 1962 to 1980. He then went to Watertown, S.D. to work with the same agency until 1982.
Ole enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood carving and gardening. He also enjoyed working with farmers and people, buying and building houses while working through FMHA.
He taught Sunday school while living in Clear Lake, S.D. and wood carving at the senior center in Ortonville for 10 years.
He is survived by wife, Darlene of 62 years; daughter, Candy Mohnsen of Corona, S.D; granddaughter and grandson, Amber and Carlos Huebner; 5 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, David Mohnsen; and three brothers.
