Myrtle Ella (Swezey) Vandeventer was born on September 8, 1911, in Malta Township, MN, to parents Earl Edson and Sarah Marie (Johnson) Swezey. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at the Elim Lutheran Church in Clinton, MN. Myrtle attended school at Clinton School District #12 and then Morris Ag.Vocational School in Morris, MN, where she graduated in May 1928.
On October 1, 1934, Myrtle married Verble Leroy Vandeventer in Milbank, SD. They traveled by train to Albany, Oregon and worked in the Albany area and Longview-Kelso, Washington area before returning to Clinton, MN. To this union four children were born, Gilyard, Amy, Roland, and Leonard. Myrtle enjoyed being a housewife and mother for her husband and children. She also worked outside the home as a clerk for Moberg's Dept. Store and also as a bookkeeper for the Clinton Creamery. Myrtle enjoyed working at the Good Samaritan Home in Clinton as a Nurses Aide for 12 years. In her later years, Myrtle enjoyed helping Prairie Five by volunteer-driving and helping to coordinate meals at the Memorial Building in Clinton.
In her free time, Myrtle enjoyed knitting and crocheting fine needlework. She also treasured playing cards and games with her family and friends. Myrtle was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Elim Lutheran Church where she served as a Financial Secretary and also with the Ladies Aid. A fond memory for Myrtle was when she was selected as "Outstanding Senior for Big Stone County" in August of 1994.
Myrtle passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2005, at the Northridge Residence Nursing Home in Ortonville, MN, at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sarah and Earl Swezey; husband, Verble Vandeventer; son, Leonard Vandeventer; daughter, Amy Thornton; and three brothers, Ervin Swezey, Edgar Swezey, and Lawrence Swezey.
She is survived by her two sons, Gilyard Vandeventer of Minnetonka, MN; Roland Vandeventer of Seal Beach, CA; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
