Myrtle Mary Johnson was born on February 19, 1910 to parents John Edwin and Otilie Theresa (Scheele) Johnson in Lockwood Township, SD. At the age of seven, the family left Roberts County and moved to Big Stone City. Growing up, she attended school in Big Stone City, graduating from high school in 1928.
Myrtle worked as a bookkeeper for both Seven-Up Bottling and Hasslen Construction, spending half of her time at one business and half at the other. In 1980, Myrtle retired but by no means slowed down. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN, she served as the Secretary-Treasurer of her circle for ten years. She was also the Treasurer for The Round Table Club as well as the Senior Citizens of Big Stone City. Myrtle even found time to be a member of the Ortonville Hospital Auxiliary and volunteer at Northridge Residence.
In Myrtle's free time she enjoyed working on crafts and reading. She especially enjoyed growing flowers. Following her retirement, Myrtle began traveling whenever she could taking bus trips all over the United States. One of Myrtle's best loved pastimes was watching the Twins play, she could always be counted on to know how they were doing at any point in the season. Above all the time she spent working and in outside interests, Myrtle always put the welfare of her family first and this was her main interest. She delighted in making treats for her nieces and nephews and later their children.
Myrtle passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Ortonville Hospital in Ortonville, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Edwin and Otilie Theresa (Scheele) Johnson; brother, Leonard; and sister-in-law, Irene.
Myrtle is survived by her nephew, Holland (Betty) Phillips, their children Michael and Lynn and their spouses. She is also survived by many more cousins and close friends.
