Murlyn Alfred Schnaser was born on July 2, 1933 to loving parents Alfred and Orinda (Obitz) Schnaser. His mother went into labor while at a picnic, Alfred took Orinda to her parents home across from where the cheese factory stands today where they were blessed with Murlyn's birth. Growing up, Murlyn had two brothers; Bion and B. J., and two sisters; Iva and WandaLee. He went to school through the ninth grade at Big Stone High School.
Murlyn spotted Clarice Anderson riding in the back of her parents car from church and was immediately smitten with her. He later presented himself at her parents home and was invited to dinner, Murlyn was the consummate gentleman. They were united in matrimony on December 6, 1952 at the First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. To this union were born three wonderful children, Sandy, Donavan, and Terry. Murlyn brought flowers and candy to Clarice on Mother's Day year after year, eventually taking his daughters with him to help pick Mayflowers for their mother. Murlyn and Clarice celebrated fifty-four wonderful years together before his passing.
Early on Murlyn farmed, but his true passion was realized when he and Clarice founded the Twin Brooks Threshing Show. Year after year, they not only enjoyed putting on the threshing show but also visiting area threshing shows where he became a familiar face on the circuit. In 2004, he was honored to host the 2004 National Plowing Competition. Murlyn and Clarice also operated Minn-Kota Repair, celebrating eighteen years in business this year.
As busy as he was, Murlyn also found time for fun. When he was younger, Murlyn enjoyed hunting, something that he later passed on to his grandchildren. He took a special liking to feeding chickens, and was always ready to go to a flea market or auction sale. During his quieter times, Murlyn liked to read True West Magazine. Every day at 4:30 am in Big Stone City and 3:00 pm in Odessa, he could be found bantering with his friends. Nothing warmed his heart more than spending time with his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, sometimes muskrat hunting and sometimes plowing snow.
Murlyn peacefully passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at the Ortonville Hospital in Ortonville, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Orinda; and his son, Donavan; and his beloved American Eskimo dog, Skippy.
Murlyn is survived by his loving wife, Clarice; two daughters, Sandy (Dan) Goergen and Terry (Doug) Mieltz; six grandchildren, Chad (Angela), Liza, Ryan, Shantelle, Cody and Taylor Goergen; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Caleb, and Kaitlyn Goergen.
