Memorial services for Mrs. (Tom) Janet Adler, age 74, of Milbank, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2006, at the Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank. Reverend Jeanne Semrad will officiate. Janet died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at a hospital in Monroe, WI. They had just arrived at their daughter Jean and family's home in Monticello, WI, for the Thanksgiving holidays when she became ill. There will be no visitation. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Janet Adler Scholarship Fund. The organist will be Carol Ydstie. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Milbank City Cemetery at a later time.
Janet was born on April 28, 1932, in Milbank and was the only child of C.H. (Kelly) and Alice (Miller) Berkner. She was valedictorian of the Milbank High School Class of 1950. She was active in school in a variety of activities. Janet was known by many for her lovely soprano voice. After graduating from Milbank High School, she was employed as a bookkeeper at C.E. McGowan Lumber Company in Milbank. In 1950 she began dating Tom Adler. The couple was united in marriage on October 3, 1953, in Manhattan, KS. Tom was serving as a clarinetist in the United States Army at Fort Riley. In 1954 they moved to Fort Eustis, VA. Janet worked as a clerk for the Superintendent of Schools in Williamsburg, VA. That same year Tom was transferred to Fort Mason near San Francisco. Tom was discharged from active duty in 1955 and the couple returned home to the family farm. Janet was a mother and homemaker. In 1970 she began working at Milbank Insurance Company as an insurance clerk. She worked there until her retirement in 1992.
Janet's children and grandsons were her greatest joy. She and Tom never missed their school events. She continued to attend school events long after her children had graduated. Janet began singing in public when she was nine years old. As a teenager she began singing in the Adult Choir at the First Methodist Church (Parkview). She sang with the choir for over thirty years. Janet was a member of the Merry Mrs. Extension Club. She enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished seamstress.
Survivors include her husband Tom, Milbank; her children, Jane Reed and her husband Shane, Westminster, CO; Jean McGonagle and her husband Todd, Monticello, WI; and John Adler and his wife Kathy, Pierre, SD; and two grandsons, Sean Berry, Norfolk, VA; and Duncan Thomas McGonagle, Monticello, WI.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and two infant daughters, Christine and Pauline.
