Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Schulte Poppen Iblings, age 89, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 30, 2007, at the Valley Baptist Church in Milbank. Emma died on Monday, April 23, 2007 at her apartment in Milbank. Pastors Dennis Webber and Roger Poppen will officiate. Milbank. The organist will be Sherry DeBoer and the pianist will be Barb Bear. Special music will be provided by a quartet composed of Sherry DeBoer, Barb Bear, Mark Boerger and Dave McVey. Sherry DeBoer and Mark Boerger will sing a duet. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday, April 29, 2007, from 2-4 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Monday one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be Dr. Ken Schulte, Donald DeBoer, Wilford Schulte, Vernon Mohrman, Paul DeBoer, and Dale Schulte? Burial will be in the Corona Baptist Cemetery, rural Corona, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Valley Baptist Church or to World Vision, Inc., 409 W. 6th Ave., Milbank, SD 57252.
Emma was born on September 14, 1917, at Madison, NE, the daughter of Herman and Doretha (Meyers) Schulte. At the age of thirteen, Emma accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized by immersion that same year. She then became a member of the First Baptist Church in Corona.
She attended school in Corona and was a member of the first graduating class of Corona High School. Following high school, Emma attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD, after which she taught in rural schools in Roberts County.
In 1939 Emma was united in marriage to Herman Poppen. To this union five children were born. They farmed in rural Corona, SD, until 1956. The family then moved to Menlo Park, CA. While living in California, Emma worked in various capacities in the banking business. Herman Poppen died in 1973. In 1975 Emma was married to Albert Iblings. They continued to reside in California until 1978 when they moved to Milbank. Albert Iblings died on August 28, 1983.
Emma will be remembered as a woman who loved her family and her Lord. During her lifetime Emma was a faithful and loyal supporter of the church of which she was a member, diligently serving in various capacities. In the First Baptist Church of Los Altos, CA, she was a deaconess and a Sunday school teacher. At Valley Baptist Church she served as Sunday school teacher, financial secretary, and as an officer in the Women's Missionary Fellowship. She was a choir member in both Corona Baptist and Valley Baptist Churches. Emma also did volunteer work at KCGN, Milbank's Christian radio station. At the time of her death, Emma was a member of Valley Baptist Church in Milbank.
She is survived by three sons: Pastor Roger Poppen and wife Naomi, Bakersfield, CA; Daryl Poppen and wife Karen, Yucaipa, CA; and Dan Poppen, Rancho Cordova, CA; two stepsons: Terrance McCann and wife Joanne, Brooklyn Park, MN, and Randy Iblings and wife Kathleen, Maple Grove, MN; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter; two husbands; three brothers, Alfred, Harry, and Elmer Schulte; two sisters, Martha Scheffler and Hilda Scheffler; one son, Richard Poppen; and one grandson, Greg Poppen.
