Miranda Elaine Mathison was born December 14, 1916 to Severt and Nettie (Robertson) Mathison in Artichoke Township. She was the third of seven children. Miran was baptized and confirmed at Eidskog Lutheran Church. She attended school at District 26 and graduated from District #9. Miran stayed home to help with the younger children, she learned to bake bread and cookies at a very young age.
Later, she worked at various homes, helping with child-care, laundry, cooking and baking. She met Henry Redfield at a Sunday School picnic down at Lakeside Park. Having been introduced by Alfred Moen, they married on his birthday; November 28, 1936, during the “Dirty Thirties.” Hank was often heard calling Miran his “GoGo Girl” since she was always on the go.
Often, they could be seen walking hand in hand to the barn to milk cows. They lived on a farm at Artichoke until 1942, when they bought a farm in Prior Township. While there, she was very active in the Homemaker’s Club; making toys and sewing for the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. She was a Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a 4-H Leader. At the time, they enjoyed potlucks and playing cards with the neighbors. She enjoyed sewing, making cloths for her 3 oldest children (the youngest wanted store bought cloths).
In 1961, they bought a farm south of Clinton and built a new home. Miran was very active in Trinity Lutheran Church. They retired off the farm in 1981, moving to Clinton. In 1982, they moved to Ortonville. There, she was a very active member at First English Lutheran Church: she was a member of Circle 4 and Day of Love Quilting. After Henry entered Northridge, Miran moved to a townhouse. In May of 2004, she moved to Fairway View, and on September 27, 2008, Miran moved into Northridge Residence.
Miran enjoyed traveling, playing cards, bingo, bowling and dancing. Her favorite musician was Lawrence Welk. She made many beautiful quilts for family and church. Miran has embroidered dishtowels numbering into the 100’s. At her house, the coffee pot was always on and the cookie jar was always full. Everyone was welcome to share coffee, meals and good conversation at her house. Her baked beans and rice pudding were always requested at family gatherings.
Miranda died on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Northridge Residence in Ortonville, having lived to reach the age of 92 years.
