May Glander

May 14, 1920 — October 20, 2009

Private family services for Mrs. May Glander, age 89, of Tucson, AZ, and formerly of Milbank, SD, will be held at a later date. May died on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson.

It was May's wish that she be cremated. There will be no visitation. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank is in charge of the local arrangements.

May was born on May 14, 1920, in Albee, SD, to Chauncey H. and Hedwig (Fischer) Port. She was raised in Albee, SD. May attended elementary school in Albee and graduated from Revillo High School in 1937.

On June 20, 1943, May and Jack Laurence Glander were married in the Grace Lutheran Church in Albee. Together they farmed the Glander homestead, located northeast of Milbank, until Jack's death in 1949. May then returned to Albee and cared for her father Chauncey until his death in 1953.

Now a single mother with three children to support, May moved to Milbank and began what was to become a successful career in banking. She was employed at the First National Bank of Milbank until 1961 when she moved to Tucson, AZ, with her daughters. May continued her banking career in Tucson at the Southern Arizona Bank until her retirement in 1985.

May's strength and independent character was demonstrated in raising her family and in her successful banking career. Throughout her life May was an avid reader and took an active interest in politics. She enjoyed many friends and relatives and remained in contact with them until her death.

Survivors include her three daughters, Janice Rudman and husband Ron, of Payson, AZ; Patricia Glander, of Cotaro, AZ; and Laurel Hymer and husband Ken, of Benson, AZ; four grandchildren: Ryan and Rebecca Rudman, Annette Hymer, and Rebecca Kerr and husband Darren; two great grandchildren, Jessika and Rachel Thornes; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

May was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Myrtle.
