Maurice was born on April 16, 1915 to parents John and Julia (Vingness) Johnson in Baltic, South Dakota. The family consisted of six boys and two girls. Maurice was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed in the Nidaros church in Baltic, SD on May 11, 1930. He graduated from Baltic High School in 1934 followed by serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Custer, South Dakota. He returned to his home town and began his life-time career working as assistant manager at the Farmers Lumber Company in Baltic. In 1937 he became assistant manager in Brookings, SD for the Farmers Cooperative Lumber Co.



On December 23, 1940, Maurice was united in marriage to Vera Dalsgaard of Dell Rapids, SD. The couple happily celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990. To this union, one son, Gary was born. He resides in Fontana, Wisconsin.



Maurice entered the service of his country in November of 1943 until March of 1946, serving with the New York 27th Infantry Division in Communications and Military Police. He served in the Pacific War Zone receiving several medals.



Retail lumber business has been his profession for over 50 years, working as manager for line companies in Baltic and Brookings, SD, Dows, and Little Rock, Iowa and Hardwick, Minnesota. Maurice purchased his own business in Ortonville, MN from C.E. Kaercher in April of 1954 and moved his family here from Iowa. After 31 years in the local business, he retired in March of 1985. He was always a staunch supporter of his town and enjoyed meeting and working with the public.



Maurice had been a very active member of the local Kiwanis Club for 42 years with a perfect attendance record of 31 years. He was also an active member of the First English Lutheran Church congregation having served on several boards. Maurice was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3964, American Legion Post #229, former member of the Masonic Lodge #97, and of the Royal Arch. He was also an alumni member of the National Assn. of the C.C.C.?s. While Maurice lived in Iowa, he was a volunteer Fire Fighter and served several years on the school board.



Maurice was enthusiastic about antique cars, having been a proud owner of a 1917 Model T Ford Truck and a 1954 Classic Buick. Maurice enjoyed traveling, being with his family and friends. Music and gardening were his hobbies, plus hunting with his son earlier in life.



Preceded in death was his loving wife, Vera; his parents; brothers Carl, Joseph, Albin, Edward, and Gotfred; sisters Clarice and Obie Mildred.



Grateful for having shared his life, he is survived by his loving son, Gary A. Johnson, of Fontana, WI, Mary & Alvin Lyng, and Norma Johnson, sisters in law and brother in law, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
