Mat W. Wilm was born on September 28, 1918, in Millerville, MN, to parents Joseph and Helena (Bursken) Wilm. As a young boy, Mat was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith in Millerville, MN. Mat then moved with his family to Browns Valley where he attended District # 3 Country School completing all eight grades in only 7 years and graduating from Browns Valley High School in 1935.
Following his education, Mat worked for area farmers before being drafted into the United States Army where he served with the 3rd Infantry Division. Mat was scheduled to be discharged from Ft. Louis, Washington, where he was stationed when World War II broke out. He served his country proudly in many different areas of the world including Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, France, Germany, and Austria. Mat was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945 at the conclusion of the war.
Upon his return home to Browns Valley, Mat took a job with the Creamery where he delivered milk. Mat then became manager of the Creamery and retired 39 years later.
On Mat?s birthday, September 28, 1947, he and Dolores Kaus were married in the St. Anthony Catholic Church parsonage. Together the couple made their home in Browns Valley where they would have celebrated 60 years together on the 28th of September, 2007.
Mat loved his work and took great pride in it. He was a very active member of over 62 years with the William Krensing American Legion Post #58 of Browns Valley, MN, where he served as past Post Commander. Mat also served for many years as the finance officer and Traverse County American Legion Council Commander. He was also a Life Member of the Sisseton VFW Post #3342. When not involved with the Legion or VFW, Mat treasured time spent with family and friends. He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he served as usher and also as a nursing home Communion Minister. Mat was also a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Mat was very community minded and took pleasure in helping serve as President of the Browns Valley Alumni Association, President of the Town and Country Club, and Finance Secretary on the Library Board for two terms. His zest for life and his helping hand will be missed by those whose life he touched.
Mat passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, SD, reaching the age of 88 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helena; two brothers, Bert and Henry; and two sisters, Louise and Mary.
Left to cherish Mat's memory is his wife, Dolores Wilm; sister, Mildred Johnson; brother-in-law, Gerry (Arlyene) Kaus; twenty-nine nieces and nephews; as well as many extended family and friends.
