Funeral services for Mary Joan "Joanie" Steinmetz, age 76, of St. William's Care Center in Milbank will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, with burial in the Holy Cross Cemetery at Indianapolis, at a later time. Joanie died on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at St. William's Care Center in Milbank.
Mary Joan Steinmetz was born on January 31, 1930, the fifth child of George and Josephine (Lane) Steinmetz. Joanie lived with her family in Indianapolis until the age of 19. She was a mentally handicapped lady who never married. On October 1, 1949, Joanie was placed at the Mount St. Joseph Home in Lake Zurich, Illinois. She came to Angela Hall at St. William's Care Center on November 12, 1971. Joanie related well to the staff at St. Williams as well as to her friends and family. She enjoyed TV, music, and observing crafts. Joanie especially enjoyed the outdoors. She was a very friendly lady who often showed concern for others.
Joanie is survived by her sister, Ann O'Connor and her brother, Dr. Edward F. Steinmetz, MD, both of Indianapolis, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents and three siblings preceded her in death.
