Mary Loretta Haukos was born July 23, 1920, in rural Graceville, MN. She was the daughter of Francis and Hazel (Shuckhart) Kruger. Mary was baptized in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Graceville and attended grade school at the Country School District #9 of Traverse County. When Mary was 14 her mother died. At that time she moved to town to live with her Shuckhart grandparents and attended Graceville High School. Mary was very active in high school – she was the class secretary, typist for the school paper, played basketball and shortstop for the kitten ball team. She never missed a day of school and graduated as Valedictorian in June, 1938. As a young woman, Mary aspired to be a doctor. However, in June of 1939, she met Norris Jeroy Haukos at a "house party". Mary fell in love with his upbeat personality, his handsome face, and the fact that he was a hard worker and a good dancer! They were married on December 2, 1939, in the Holden Lutheran Church Parsonage. They were blessed with three children.
Mary was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 16, 1941. In 1947 she joined the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Beardsley, a faith community that she was deeply involved with her entire life, organizing and leading a variety of events. Even in her later years, you could find her at the church every Wednesday quilting for the missions. If Mary didn't make it to church, something was wrong! She lived her faith and shared that with her family.
Mary, along with Norris, was also deeply committed to the town of Beardsley, volunteering wherever needed. She was the Beardsley Postmaster for two years and also a mail carrier for many years.
The highlight of Mary's life were the times her family gathered to celebrate one another and the life they shared – whether it was 4th of July at the cabin, birthdays and anniversaries, or holidays, one thing was certain – there would be great food and wonderful memories created.
Mary passed away on October 1, 2011, at the Browns Valley Health Care Center in Browns Valley. She reached the age of 91.
Left to cherish her memory are her children – Jeroy (Karen) Haukos of Beardsley, Loretta (Larry) Peterson of Annadale, MN, and daughter-in-law Joanie Haukos of Simi Valley, CA; grandchildren - Dale (Laurie) Haukos of Beardsley, Daniel (Kate) Haukos of Anoka, MN, Rebecca (Tim) Doschadis of Beardsley, MN, Bob (Jennifer) Haukos of Beardsley, MN, Mary (Mike) Folk of Beardsley, MN, Bill (Mindy) Peterson of Isanti, MN, Amy (Troy) Schreifels of Big Lake, MN; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one brother Paul (Joyce) Kruger of Beardsley, MN; sisters-in-law Adeline Hanson and Eileen Adolphson; and many nieces, nephews and several Godchildren.
Meeting her in heaven are her parents; her husband, Norris; her son, Merrill (Mo); her grandson, Doug Haukos; brothers Lawrence, Jay, Donald, Benjamin, and Eugene; sisters Ruth, Lila, Lucille, Marjorie, Dorothy, Esther, and Pauline.
