Marlys McAllister

Marlys June Ulrich was born June 19, 1924 at the family farm in Grant County, just west of Big Stone City SD to parents Charles and Minnie (Camus) Ulrich. She graduated from Ortonville High School in 1942. After two years of teacher preparation coursework, she taught at School District 63, north of Ortonville, and at Dawson Country School.
Marlys was united in marriage to Maurice “Mid” Lucian McAllister on April 14, 1945 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ortonville. She and Mid farmed 400 acres together and raised angus cattle in Malta Township, 5 miles east and 1 mile north of Clinton. After retiring in November 1973, they moved to Hilltop Manor in Ortonville where Marlys worked for 13 years for Verda and Charlie Bartz at the Valley View Motel.
Marlys was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild in Graceville from 1945 to 1973. She has been a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Ortonville since 1973 and volunteered with the Funeral Committee until 2007.
Marlys loved to travel to Pennsylvania every year to see her sister and family, and to Arizona every year to visit her daughter and family. She loved bowling, dancing, cooking, baking and gardening. She was an avid Twins and Vikings fan.
Marlys passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 9:50am at the Ortonville Hospital reaching the age of 86 years, 2 months, 20 days.
Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three siblings, Herman “Budd” Ulrich, Rodger Ulrich and Shirley Ulrich Miller.
Survivors include two daughters: Maureen (Chuck) Flolo and Toni McAllister Sparby. She has 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren: Tim (Ann Marie) Davis and Danielle, AnaLiza & Trenton; Chad (Brigette) Flolo and Lily; Mark (Andrea) Flolo and Kate; Anna Davis Mette and Christopher; and many other extended family.
Marlys recently moved to Graceville to live with her daughter, Toni. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ortonville Area Healthcare Foundation.
