Larson Funeral Home of Ortonville announces the death of Marlys Longhenry, age 82, of Ortonville. Marlys passed away on September 19, 2011 at Ortonville Area Health Services in Ortonville. Funeral Services for Marlys will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 5-8:00 PM at Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Pastor Robert Friedrich will be officiating and burial will be at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville.
Marlys Elsie Kurtz was born on January 11, 1929 to parents Frank M. Kurtz and Elsie M. (Teigh) Kurtz in Ortonville, MN. She attended school in Big Stone City, SD until the 9th Grade. She was confirmed in the Catholic faith on June 5, 1938 and again in 1945 as an adult by Reverend E. Willie in the Lutheran Faith in Town Walter.
Marlys was united in marriage on May 22, 1946 to Ervin Gustav Longhenry. They made their home in several places, mainly in the Big Stone area. To this union, they were blessed with ten children.
Marlys stayed home raising her 10 children, she would also do seasonal work at the Big Stone Canning Factory. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Nassau, MN. She loved to bake, especially bread and chocolate chip cookies; she also enjoyed playing yahtzee and Bingo. She always had her hand held yahtzee game playing at the nursing home. You could hear it all the way down the hall.
Her family was very important to her. She enjoyed them when they would come to visit. She was always sitting in the lobby , watching and waving to all the visitors coming and going. She will be missed by many.
Marlys is survived by her children: Janet (Charles) Spalinger of Clinton, MN, Sharon (James) Firestine of Woodlake, MN, Diana (Gerald) Stieb of Big Stone City, SD, Judy Johnson of Ortonville, MN, Patricia Foss of Ortonville, MN, Gary (Anita) Longhenry of Greeley, CO, Rhonda (Maynard) Mangelsen of Shell Lake, WI, Danny Longhenry of Eaton, CO, Gloria (DeWayne) Larson of Odessa, MN, and Michael (Nancy) Longhenry of Grantsburg, WI; 31 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Marlys is preceded in death by her husband Ervin; great-grandson Avory James Raffety; and son-in-law Duane Johnson.
