Marliss was born to Alfred and Clara (Christensen) Gilbertson, in Tenney, MN, on September 24, 1922. She moved with her family shortly after her birth to Eden, South Dakota. Marliss attended school in Eden for eleven years, graduating from Webster High School in 1939, when the Eden school closed. Marliss attended Northern Normal, receiving a teaching certificate and taught in several rural schools in the Marshall County area during the 1950's and 60's.

During WW II she lived in San Francisco and worked at a radar tube factory. Marliss married Stanley C. Brewster on December 31, 1944. They made their home in Fort Worth, Texas, while Stanley served in the military. In 1949 Marliss and Stanley returned to Eden, SD, and along with her father, purchased the local lumberyard. They named their business the Brewster and Gilbertson Lumber Company. Marliss remained active in the business serving as the bookkeeper for many years. In the mid-1970's, she retired from the lumberyard.

Before being disabled by Alzheimer's, she loved to dance to the Big Band sounds of the 1940's and play golf with her sister, Lois. Marliss also enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, crossword puzzles, reading, playing the organ, and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Roslyn Lutheran Church.

Marliss entered the Americana Nursing Home in Aberdeen in 1995. She became a resident of Bethesda in 1996, where the kind and loving staff treated her like she was a member of their own family, for which we are deeply grateful.

Marliss is survived by her two sons, Jay Brewster, of Rapid City, SD, and Thomas Brewster and wife Joan, of rural Lake City, SD; her daughter Vicki Helwig and husband Ronald, of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren: Joe Brewster, Rachel Hanisch, Eric Brewster, Nick Helwig, and Aimee Helwig; step-granddaughter, Michaela Just; four great grandchildren; and one step-great grandchild.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and sister, Lois Sherman.
