Margaret Loeschke

Margaret Harriet Kiern was born on May 20, 1913 in rural Grant County, SD to parents James and Mary (Geror) Kiern. While growing up on the family farm, Margaret attended the Nassau Grade School. In 1931, she graduated from the Ortonville High School. On October 1, 1931, Margaret was united in marriage to Harold Theodore Loeschke at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank, SD. To this union were born four children: Jim, Lyle, Harlan, and Sandy. Margaret and Harold celebrated fifty-seven years together prior to his passing in 1989.
Margaret was used to working hard throughout her life. While raising her children she was a farmer's wife, helping Harold when she could. Later, she took on part-time jobs working as a waitress, in the canning factory, and more recently as a retail clerk at Valu Variety. She taught this work ethic to her children, stressing the importance of working hard to provide for the family. Their hard work allowed her family to live comfortably. She was a wonderful cook, often making one of her kids' favorites' glorified rice.
In her free time, Margaret enjoyed dancing, sewing and playing cards with family and friends. She was a 4-H leader as well as a member of the Willow Bend Extension Club and the last surviving member of the Big Stone Farmers Club. Margaret also did what she could to be helpful to friends and family, sometimes giving haircuts to those who needed one. Later in life, Margaret was delighted to welcome grandchildren into her home and loved nothing more than to spend time with them. Margaret's strong will and loving demeanor will be missed by all those who knew her.
Margaret passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2007, at the Northridge Residence Nursing Home in Ortonville, MN. Margaret is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold; parents, James and Mary; and two grandsons, Robert and Douglas.
Margaret is survived by three sons; Jim (Darlene) Loeschke of Ortonville, MN, Lyle (June) Loeschke of Pine City, MN, and Harlan (Janet) Loeschke of Milbank, MN; daughter, Sandy (Jerry) Rieck of Sioux Falls, SD; fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and special friend, Viola Schuerman of Benson, MN; cousin, Vivian (Babe) Goetsch of Nassau, MN and many nieces and nephews.
