Margaret (Lauster) Gerhardt, age 99, died early Saturday morning, January 19, 2008, at E.C. Elderly Home Care in Phoenix, AZ.



Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 1:30 pm, at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City, SD, with Pastor Beth Conrad officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Big Stone City, SD.



Margaret was born January 24, 1908 to George and Flora (Clark) Lauster. She graduated from Big Stone High School in 1925, and attended Dakota Wesleyan, in Mitchell, SD, for one year before coming back to Big Stone, where she worked as a bookkeeper at Farmers State Bank for 2 A�A½ years. She clerked at Lauster Bros. store until the death of her uncle Will and her father. Margaret then operated the business with her brother, Lloyd, until the business was destroyed by fire in 1952. On October 15, 1953, Margaret was united in marriage to Carl Gerhardt. Margaret went on to work at Big Stone State Bank as a bookkeeper and retired as the head cashier in 1972. She and her husband also owned and operated the Big Stone Motel and sportshop.



Margaret was a member of the Tabor United Methodist Church, U.M.W, Sarah Circle, affiliated member of Lakeview Methodist Church of Sun City, AZ., Round Table Club (for over 50 years), pianist for Methodist and Evangelical churches for 20 years. She served as Treasurer for Sunday School and Miss'y society for several years; she was also a member of the Bridge Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.



After her husband's death in 1982, Margaret spent winters in Sun City, AZ, until 1997, when she sold her home in Big Stone City and made Arizona her permanent residence.



Margaret's interests included needlework, she was an accomplished cook, an avid bridge player, had an exquisite dog collection, enjoyed music, playing the organ and piano, and never lost her fondness for stuffed animals.



Margaret is survived by four nieces; Robyn K.C. Lauster (Bill Wortman), Sandra (Stephen) Bogenrief, Loy (James) Norris, Cheryl Nerby; two step nieces, Sheila (Roy) Pool, Beverly Trice; one nephew, Larry Lauster; three grand-nieces, six grand-nephews, three great-grand nieces and three great-grand nephews; several cousins; good friends, Willard and Dianne Haugen, Betty Sloan, her two sons and their families.



Preceding Margaret in death were her husband; parents; sister, Mildred; three brothers, Lloyd, Kenneth and Ralph and their wives; one niece; and one step-nephew.
