Marcellus William Dietz was born on February 12, 1922, in Ivanhoe, MN, to Fred and Anna (Pfeiffer) Dietz. Marcellus was baptized in the Catholic faith in Ivanhoe, MN and attended country school until the sixth grade.
In 1944, Marcy joined the United States Navy, where he served for two years. On June 26, 1946, Marcy was united in marriage to Margaret Muller. They resided in Graceville. Margaret and Marcy initially lived in a chicken coop and from there built their home on the family farm 3 miles north of Graceville. From this union, they were blessed with five children: Richard, Jim, Connie, Cathy, and Mark. They farmed and raised their family there for 32 years. Margaret passed away on July 3, 1978.
On June 28, 1980, Marcy was united in marriage to Ardella Stalberger. Marcy and Della made their home in Mahnomen, MN. In retirement, they became avid travelers, including trips to Alaska, California, Colorado to visit his brother, and Hawaii to revisit Pearl Harbor.
Marcy was an active member of VFW Post #9880 in Omega, MN. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or sporting events. Marcy participated in all types of hunting: coons, elk, caribou hunting in Alaska, and also bear hunting. He spent time playing cards, especially 10 point with family and neighbors.
Marcy died on February 12, 2009 at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield on the day he was born, his 87th birthday.
Marcy is survived by his wife, Della; children: Richard (Julie) Dietz of Waubun, MN, Jim (Fern) Dietz of Fairmont, MN, Connie (Jim) Phalen of Graceville, MN, Cathy (Lloyd) Hanson of Mahnomen, and Mark (Anne) Dietz of Graceville, MN; grandchildren: Susan (Mike) Amick of Brainerd, MN, Stanley Dietz of Waubun, MN, Becky Dietz of Waubun, April Dietz of Fargo, ND, Wayne (Jodi) Dietz of Albert Lea, MN, Neil (Jennifer) Phalen of Watertown, SD, Kristin (Dave) Tritz of Dumont, MN, Melissa (Derek) Schroding of North Wales, PA, Holly (Mike) Lee of Roseau, MN, Travis (Tanya) Gary of Mahnomen, MN, Dustin (Amanda) Trautner of St.Cloud, MN, Markie Dietz, of Brookings SD, Jessica (Kyle) Kleindl of Barry, MN, and Carly (Trampas) Howe of Sattelite Beach, FL; great-grandchildren: Christopher, Elliot, Gabriella, Ruby, Justin, M.J., Fawn, Thomas, Gwen, Ellie, Parker, Austin, Preston, Devin, Meaghan, Ashlyn, Brett, Alayna, Marcus, Julie, Mitchell, Riley, Emillyanne, Charles, and Thea Margaret; brother Bill (Della) Dietz of Cortez, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Marcellus is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; parents, Fred and Anna; sister, Evelyn; brothers Ervin and Joe.
