Mae Edmunda (Johnson) Larson was born on May 19, 1927, on a farm near Lafayette, MN, to parents, Johann Arvid and Agnes (Olson) Johnson. She was the middle of five children. Mae was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Bernadotte Lutheran Church. As a young girl, Mae attended school in Gaylord, MN, and graduated from Gaylord High School. Following her graduation, Mae attended Mankato State College where she obtained her two year teaching degree. After completing her degree, Mae taught first and fourth grade for Grand Meadow, MN, as well as for Heron Lake, MN.
On January 5, 1952, Mae was married to John Larson at the Scandia Grove Lutheran Church near St. Peter, MN. The couple had met through Mae's sister who worked with John's sister at the telephone company. Mae and John were blessed with six children; Curtis, Gwendolyn, Pauline, Jennifer, David and Lorelei . Shortly after their marriage, Mae quit teaching school and devoted her time to being a loving wife and mother to her children.
At home, she dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren. John and Mae enjoyed traveling across the country, taking car trips to California, Texas and Pennsylvania. Mae also enjoyed her trips to Sweden to meet her relatives living there. She was well known for her great sense of humor and her love of collecting.
In her spare time, Mae enjoyed sewing and volunteering for community events. She also took great pride in providing a helping hand at the First English Lutheran Church where she had been a member for over 37 years. Mae was also a member of the Day of Love, Alter Guild and active in Circle. She also gave of her time helping with meals on wheels. She will be truly missed by all.
Mae passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the Northridge Residence Nursing Home in Ortonville, MN, reaching the age of 79 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, J. Arvid and Agnes; husband, John; three brothers, Virgil, Willard, and Vernon; and two sons-in-law, Bill Thymian and Frank Karels.
Mae will be remembered by her children, Curtis (Sandy) Larson of Willmar, MN, Gwendolyn (Bill) Oswood of Big Stone City, SD, Pauline Karels (Jerome Schuelke) of Ortonville, MN, Jennifer Thymian (Jim Sherod) of Ortonville, MN, David (Lori) Larson of Ortonville, MN, and Lorelei (Rod) Prasnicki of Big Stone City, SD; sixteen grandchildren, Chris (Kari) Dorry, Ben (Larissa) Dorry, Abe Dorry, Jake Dorry, Sarah Karels, Scott Karels, Natasha (Jeff) Hynnek, Jessica (Jerrod) Swenson, Nicholas Thymian, Kelly Larson, Dan Larson, Zach Larson, Vanessa Prasnicki, Heather Prasnicki, Shawn Prasnicki, and Reed Prasnicki; and four great grandchildren, Jenna Dorry, Lexi Hynnek, Owen and Eliot Dorry; one sister, Norma Tostenson of Gaylord, MN; as well as many nieces nephews, extended family and friends.
