Mabel treasured the time she spent in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The memories she made working with her grandson Bobby in the Hills, in the summer, held a special place in her heart. On June 15, 1974, Mabel married Walter Mews.

In her spare time, Mabel enjoyed reading and visiting with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Her favorite flowers were the rose and the lilac and she enjoyed tending to her flower gardens. Mabel was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church as well as being active in Church Circle.
