Larson Funeral Home announces the death of Luverne G. Hofhenke age 72 of Big Stone City, SD. Luverne passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Milbank, SD. Funeral Services for Luverne will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City, SD. Visitation will be held on Tuesday beginning at 12:30 until the time of service. Pastor Iva Laudermith will be officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Big Stone City, SD.

Luverne George Hofhenke was born in Milbank, South Dakota on August 30, 1938 to Parents George and Esther (Vogel) Hofhenke. Luverne was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. He grew up in the Milbank and Alban Township areas where he attended Alban Township School and Milbank High School until the 10th Grade.

In August of 1956, Luverne entered into the Air Force where he worked as an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1960. On December 26, 1957, Luverne was united in marriage to Elaine A. Dolen at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank, SD. To this union, they were blessed with six children: Kathleen, Michelle, Peggy, Larry, Dean and Darwin.

Luverne worked at the Big Stone Cheese Factory and as an auto mechanic at various places, including: Montana, Milbank, SD, Ortonville, MN, Watertown, SD and Canby, MN. He also spent some time managing a hog operation near Wilmot, SD.
Luverne was a member of the Big Stone American Legion, 2 Cylinder Club, Horizons Group and was a faithful blood donor; he gave the largest amount of blood in Grant County. Some of Luverne's hobbies included: flying airplanes, tractors, farming, building airplane models and cutting wood.

Luverne passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Milbank, South Dakota after a short stay. He had lived to reach the age of 72 years.

Luverne is survived by his wife, Elaine of Big Stone City; children: Larry Hofhenke of Sioux Falls, SD, Dean Hofhenke of St. Paul, MN, Kathleen Hansen of Milbank, SD, Michelle Karges of Milbank, SD, Peggy (Ronald) Brandriet of Brookings and Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren: Emily Hansen of Madison, SD, Buddy Karges of Watertown, SD, Matthew Karges and special friend Julie Anderson of Fargo, ND, Lucas (Amber) Karges of Sioux Falls, SD, Micheal (Cassandra) Oslund of Summit, SD, Amanda Oslund of Sioux Falls, SD, Jessica Hofhenke of Rapid City, SD, Elizabeth (Joe) Machmiller of Sioux Falls, SD, Flint Yanchunas of Yellville, Arkansas, Nicholas Dufexis of Sioux Falls, SD, Johnathan Hofhenke of Sioux Falls, SD, Alex Hofhenke of Sioux Falls, SD, LaTeena Wedell of Sioux Falls, SD; great-grandchildren: Nathaniel Wilts, Braiden Kiecksee, Cody, Hailey, Jon and Kylee Oslund, Aubrey Oslund, Neveah Johnson, Anton Hofhenke, MaKayla and Jonathan Machmiller, Dakota and Wyatt Yanchunas, Julia Vickers and Carmen and Oskar Hofhenke; siblings: Marian (Duane) Wellnitz of Miles City, MT, Arvid (Irma) Hofhenke of Milbank, SD; brother-in-law Leonard (Donna) Dolen of Watertown, SD; sisters-in-law: Karen (Jim) Loehrer of Milbank, SD, Gloria (Ted) Kubesh of Blaine, MN, Marilyn (Roger) Barnhardt of Big Stone City, SD; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Luverne is preceded in death by his son Darwin and parents George and Esther.
