Funeral services for Mrs. Luella E. Strege, age 76, of Milbank, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Alban Township, Grant County, SD. The Reverend Kim Kanitz will officiate. Luella died on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at the Ortonville Hospital in Ortonville, MN. Family members are asked to meet in the church basement by 1:30 p.m. Sunday to attend services. The organist will be Carol Angerhofer. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Saturday, February 7th, from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Sunday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Abbie Hitzemann, Taylor Strege, and Claire Strege. Active pallbearers will be Nathan Strege, Michael Strege, Daniel Athey, Andrew Hitzemann, Steve Strege, and Joel Hildebrandt. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Alban Township.
Luella was born on August 29, 1932, in Madison, MN, the daughter of Alfred and Anna (Laskowsky) Reese. She grew up on a farm near Ortonville, MN. Luella graduated from Ortonville High School in 1951. During her high school years she worked at J.C. Penney.
Luella was united in marriage to Donald Strege on January 10, 1951, in Milbank. Following marriage, the couple resided in rural Milbank, in Alban Township from 1951-1967, and in Milbank since 1967. She was a receptionist,customer service representative, and office administrator for TCI Cable in Milbank from 1980-1997.
She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving as a member of the altar guild and the ladies aide. Luella was an accomplished seamtress. She especially enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. She made the best chocolate chip cookies in the world! Luella was an avid reader and loved gardening, scrap-booking, and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed volunteering for Thrivent and at the Thrift Store in Milbank.
Survivors include her husband Don, of Milbank;
two daughters, Linda (Strege) Athey and her husband Randy, of Big Stone City, SD, and Brenda (Strege) Hitzemann and her husband Mark, of Sioux Falls, SD; three sons, Donald W. Strege and his wife Laurie, of Milbank, Roger Strege and his wife Suzy, of Buffalo, MN, and Dave Strege, of Rapid City, SD; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mae (Reese) Hildebrandt and her husband Erwin, of Kensington, MN, and Fran (Reese) Hemmer and her husband Gene, of Kerville, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and her grandson, Jason Brotzel.
