Luella Dorothy Eystad, daughter of William and Otha (Perry) Eystad, was born September 9, 1923 at home in rural Alberta. Luella was baptized and confirmed at the Reque Church in rural Alberta. She grew up and received her schooling in Alberta, graduating from Alberta High School. On March 6, 1943, Luella was united in marriage to Dan Hoxtell, and from this union, 3 children were born, Jerry, Jim and Kathi. Shortly after their marriage, Dan and Red moved to Ortonville. Red worked in various cafAAC.'s in Big Stone and Ortonville.
Red loved playing games and reading with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the many kids that called her "Grandma Red". The first rule everyone learned was that she would not play with cheaters. You also tried to remember to use proper English, because if you didn't, she would always remind you of the correct way. Red enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. If you happened to call or stop in when she was doing them, you might be asked if you knew the answer for one she couldn't remember or didn't know. She loved being around people, and everyone was always welcome at her house. Red will be remembered for her feistiness and bouncy walk.
Red was a member of the Big Stone Legion and Ortonville VFW. She was a volunteer at Northridge for many years, and served on various church boards.
Red passed away at home, on May 2, 2008. She will be missed dearly by her family and those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Jerry of Phoenix, AZ, Jim (Jill) of Big Stone City, Kathi (Russ) Thymian of Ortonville; five grandchildren, Heather (Chad) Schellberg, Amy (Ty) Hoppe, Jesse (Wendy) Thymian, Adam (and special friend, Tesla) Thymian, Darin Sigler; four great-grandchildren, Courtney and Caitlynn Schellberg, Hailey Hoppe, Joslynne Sigler; one brother, Merle (Dory) Eystad of Mesa, AZ; sister, Irene Longworth of Ortonville; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.
