On November 29, 1920 Loyal Harvey Johnson was born to parents Robert and Clara (Anderson) Johnson in Canby, Minnesota. After graduating Canby high school in 1938, Loyal worked at the Marble Store in Lincoln Co. Minnesota as a semi-tractor trailer driver.



Loyal enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard ? Merchant Marines on December 1st, 1942. He received a Combat Star during attack while in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1945, Loyal attended Officer Candidate School, and commissioned as an Ensign upon graduation in June of 1945. Loyal was discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard ? Merchant Marines on August 15, 1945. Loyal continued to work with Standard Oil Company aboard oil tankers until 1948.



On June 20, 1946, Loyal was united in marriage to Gladys Mae Schwartz at the Marble Lutheran Church in Lincoln Co., Minnesota. In 1948, Loyal began his 35 year career with Otter Tail Power Co., first working at the Hoot Lake Plant. Loyal helped start up the Ortonville Power Plant in 1950, where worked for 32 years as operator until retirement on December 31, 1982.



Loyal and Gladys wintered in Texas, Arizona, California, and Oregon for 17 years, including two trips to Brazil, South America. Loyal entered Northridge Residence on November 30, 2001.



Loyal enjoyed bowling, fishing, pheasant hunting, yard work and plowing gardens (his own and friends & neighbors). He was part of the IBEW for 55 years, the secretary for the Moose Lodge, and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, and had served as a church board member.



On Sunday, August 22, 2004, Loyal Johnson passed away at the Northridge Residence Home in Ortonville, MN.



Survivors include Loyal's wife, Gladys of Ortonville, MN; one sister-in-law, Arlene Erp; two sons, Lyndon (Sylvia) Johnson of Sao Paulo, Brazil and David (Pats Ann) Johnson of Clearwater, MN; two daughters Marlys Johnson of Maple Grove, MN and Sandra Johnson of Portland, OR; and 6 grandchildren, Carrie, Bryan, Katie, Andrea, Stephanie, and Tyler.



Preceded Loyal in death were his parents, Robert Johnson (1973) and Clara (Anderson) Johnson (1979); his two brothers, Robert Johnson and Donald Johnson; and one sister, Marilyn.
