Funeral services for longtime Strandburg, SD, resident, Mrs. Lillie C. Bergman, age 89, of Milbank, will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2006, at the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD. Lillie died on Sunday, October 22, 2006, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The Reverend Elmer P. Brinkman will officiate. The organist will be Kathy Granquist. The soloist will be Richard Thompson and the violinist and accompanist will be Carolyn Boulay. Family members are asked to meet in the church basement by 10:30 a.m. Saturday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Friday from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Saturday one hour before services. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are Lillie's nephews: John Opseth, Mike Johnson, Lane Johnson, Neal Johnson, Anton Kos, Terry Kos, Roger Backman, Leslie Johnson, Richard Thompson, and Tom Seaton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Lillie was born on January 19, 1917, at Watertown, SD, the daughter of Julius and Agnes (Holsten) Johnson. She attended grades 1-11 in Strandburg, SD, and graduated from Watertown High School, Watertown, SD, in 1934. Lillie lived in Strandburg until 1936 when she moved to Minneapolis, MN. She was united in marriage to Raymond L. Bergman on Sept. 14, 1938, in Strandburg. Following marriage, the couple resided in Minneapolis, MN. Her husband Raymond died on Nov. 22, 1949. Following his death, Lillie continued to live in Minneapolis. While residing in Minneapolis, Lillie worked as a nurse's aide at Fairview Hospital. In 1967, she returned to Strandburg. She worked as a nurse's aide at Whetstone Valley Nursing Home in Milbank for eleven years. In April 2006 Lillie entered St. William's Care Center in Milbank.
She was a member of the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg where she was active in LCW and Circle III. Lillie was also a member of the Stockholm-Strandburg American Legion Auxiliary Unit #171 and the Grant County Historical Society. She enjoyed family gatherings, reading, watching Jeopardy, quilting, knitting, sewing, and word puzzles.
Survivors include one son Larry Bergman and wife Vicki, Isle, MN; four daughters, Bette Tiernan and husband Bill, Prairie Village, Kansas; Carol Whitlow and husband Dick, rural Milbank; Bonnie Henderson and husband Jerry, Minneapolis, MN; and Christine Bergman, McGregor, MN; twelve grandchildren: Thore, Kari, Jessie, Tracie, Laura, Gwen, Steve, Jenny, Beth, Charles, Andrew, and Sara; fourteen great grandchildren: Olivia, Veronica, Robert, Josie, Sherman, Joe, Jordan, Derek, Lauren, Alyssa, Austin, Sophia, Mikelle, and Tykara; one brother Wilbur Johnson and wife Marlys, Strandburg; three sisters, Eudora Backman, Edina, MN; Loretta Orman, Milbank; and Geraldine Opseth and husband John, Mobridge, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Lillie was preceded in death by her husband Raymond; her parents; one sister, June Kos, four brothers, Theodore, Leslie, Glenn, and Harvey Johnson, and one granddaughter, Patricia Colleen (Tiernan) Maggard.
