Funeral services for Mrs. Leona E. Hanson will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 8, in the Central United Methodist Church in Milbank with Reverend Mark Phillips officiating. Leona died on Sunday, June 3, 2007, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Family members are asked to meet in the Heritage Room of the church by 10:00 a.m. Friday to attend services. Special music will be provided by Jan Liebe, organist and Russ Howard, soloist. Shirley Conraads will share personal remembrances. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the services on Friday. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Steve Barr, Tim Barr, James Benshoof, David Macy, Michael Barr, and Russ Howard.
Leona was born on July 4, 1915, at Chancellor, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Krull) Hoogestraat. She attended elementary school in Chancellor and began high school in Gillette, Wyoming, following her family's move to that location. In January 1931, she moved back to South Dakota. She was united in marriage to Norman Hanson on October 9, 1935, in Milbank. The couple farmed near Twin Brooks until her husband's death on April 18, 1974. In November 1974, Leona moved to Milbank.
Leona worked at Milbank Mutual Insurance Company for 23 years as a filing clerk. She was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church in Milbank, volunteering many years as a Sunday school teacher to young children. She was also active in many other church activities during her lifetime.
Survivors include one brother, William (Bill) Hoogestraat and wife, Ardy, of Anoka, MN; nephew, David Macy and wife Rita and their children, Jenni and Seth, Hinckley, MN, and many other nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, and eleven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
