Upon his father's death in 1952, he moved with his mother and siblings to Corona, SD. His mother married Harold Hajenga in 1959 and they lived in rural Milbank. Monte never married. Monte was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Even though he was a quiet person, Monte liked to make people laugh. He had a unique way of expressing humorous anecdotes that were funny to others because of the way in which he expressed them. Monte was very interested in how family and friends were related to each other. He enjoyed hunting and riding his motorcyle.
