Funeral services for former Corona, SD, resident, Kenneth L. Johanson, age 82, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Milbank. Pastors Mike Doran and Jerad Thomsen will officiate. Kenneth died on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Milbank. The pianist will be Diane Davis and the soloists will be Janna Wruck and Della Doran. Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 10:00 a.m. Saturday to attend services.
Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Friday from 5-7 p.m., followed by a prayer service for family and friends. Visitation will continue in the church on Saturday one hour before service.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Jerad Thomsen, Chris Vangsness, D.J. Vangsness, Ashley Johanson, Jordan Dorneman, and Cody Dorneman. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the Grant County VFW Post #3486 and the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9 of Milbank.
Kenneth was born on January 30, 1927, in Milbank, SD, to Carl and Jennie (Hoeke) Johanson. He attended Melrose #9 country school. He was a Korean War Veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Army from Nov. 4, 1950, until his honorable discharge on Nov. 3, 1952.
He married Dorothy Morton on June 8, 1952, in rural LaBolt, SD. Kenneth was a life-long farmer. Following marriage, they farmed in Geneseo Township, Roberts County, SD.
He enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, polka music, his German shepherd dogs, ice fishing, auction sales, vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, snowmobiling, and riding his 1939 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy, of Milbank; five children; Virginia Thomsen and husband John, of Brookings, SD; Joyce Vangsness and husband David, of Milbank; Irvin Johanson and wife Betsy, of Milbank; Georgia Hemmestad and husband Todd, of Holt, MO; and Kristy Dorneman and husband David, of Milbank; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Imme and husband Rollin, of Watertown, SD; sixteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Jim Johanson, and wife Darla, of Milbank; three sisters, Betty Dammer and husband Sievert, of Milbank; Doris Storm, of Milbank; and Shirley Mortensen, of Minneapolis, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Patrick Johanson.
